Option for Argentine Citizenship

Option for Argentine Citizenship

Children born abroad to a native Argentine father or mother may opt for Argentine citizenship at the Consular Section of this Embassy. The nationality option can also be carried out in Argentina, at the offices of the National Registry of Persons (RENAPER), for which purpose it is suggested that you consult with RENAPER directly.

Pursuant to applicable laws, Argentine nationality cannot be renounced. The fact that foreign citizens wishing to acquire Argentine nationality may hold one or more other nationalities does not prevent or affect the possibility of acquiring Argentine nationality. Notwithstanding the foregoing, please be advised that acquiring Argentine nationality could have consequences for other nationalities held by the citizen opting for it, if so provided by the laws of those countries. In this regard, it is suggested that you contact the corresponding foreign consulate.

In order to proceed with the procedure, you will be asked to scan the necessary documentation, as applicable, and send it to consular_efinl@mrecic.gov.ar for evaluation by this Consular Section. The procedure is in person and requires a prior appointment.

REQUIREMENTS:

I) MINORS UNDER EIGHTEEN (18) YEARS OF AGE:

In the case of minors under eighteen (18) years of age, parents may exercise the option for Argentine nationality on behalf of and representing their children.

The process of opting for nationality for a minor requires the presence and consent of both parents. If only one of them has parental responsibility, supporting documentation will be required, as indicated by this Consular Section.

Required documentation:

1. Original birth certificate, issued by the Registry of Civil Status and Capacity of Persons, of the native Argentinian parent who will exercise the option for the minor. If both parents are native Argentinian, the birth certificate of one of them will suffice.

2. Original DNI, LE, or LC of the native Argentinian parent who will exercise the option for the minor.

3. Passport (if foreign) or National Identity Document (if Argentine) of the parent who does not exercise the option but will accept it.

4.- Original birth certificate of the minor issued by Finland, Estonia, or Latvia (as applicable). The foreign birth certificate must be translated into Spanish and apostilled.

Note: The minor's birth certificate is kept at the Consular Office.

II) OVER EIGHTEEN (18) YEARS OF AGE:

Required documentation:

1.- Original birth certificate, issued by the Registry of Civil Status and Capacity of Persons, of the native Argentine father or mother. If both parents are native Argentines, it will be sufficient to present the birth certificate of one of them.

2.- Original birth certificate of the applicant issued by Finland, Estonia, or Latvia (as applicable). The foreign birth certificate must be translated into Spanish and apostilled.

Note: The applicant's birth certificate is filed at the Consular Office.

3.- Identity document and passport of the foreigner exercising the option for Argentine nationality.
