Last Friday, August 28, well-known tango artists from Argentina performed the show concert "Esencia Tanguera” at Riga Congress Hall, marking the beginning of this year's Tango Sun Festival. The unique cooperation project saw them performing together with artists from the Baltic Sea region.
The idea of the show performance “Esencia Tanguera” was to introduce classical Argentine tango to the Latvian audience and greet Riga 2014 with a show concert representing one of Argentina's most important culture expressions.
The show was led by Ricardo Barrios, a well-known Argentine actor, choreographer and tango dancer. He and his partner Laura Melo danced the major solos besides another equally succesful dancing couple, Lorena Ermocida and Pancho Martinez Pey. The acclaimed Argentine tango orchestra Quinteto Silencio played live at the show. It was the first visit of these artists to Latvia and the only performance of this group at all, in honour of Riga 2014.
Together with the leading maestros three more couples from different countries joined the performance: Brigita Urbietytė from Lithuania and Jessica Štšerbakova from Estonia, their partners Carlos Rodríguez from Argentina and Somer Surgit from Turkey as well as Maria and Pasi Lauren from Finland.
The show concert was organised as part of the International Tango Sun Festival, which this year took place for the 7th time in Riga and Jurmala. It is a non-profit event organised by a small group of enthusiastic tango dancers and has become one of the biggest and best visited tango festivals in the Baltic Sea Region.
"Esencia Tanguera" and the Tango Sun Festival were supported by the Argentine Embassy in Finland as a partner and sponsor.
